WordPress Website Health Check: 12 Signals Worth Examining

A practical guide to the performance, security, search and conversion signals that reveal whether a WordPress website needs maintenance, optimization or a rebuild.
WordPress Website Health Check: 12 Signals Worth Examining

A website can appear online and still be unhealthy. Slow responses, expired certificates, broken forms, unstable updates and unclear page structure may quietly reduce trust and enquiries. A useful WordPress health check therefore looks beyond a single speed score.

Start with availability and transport security

Confirm that the preferred domain loads consistently, redirects are intentional and HTTPS is valid across important pages. Review certificate status, mixed-content warnings and the behaviour of both www and non-www versions. These checks establish whether visitors and search engines can reach a stable canonical site.

Measure the experience, not only the server

Response time matters, but it is only one layer. Large images, render-blocking scripts, layout shifts and excessive third-party widgets can make a page feel slow after the first byte arrives. Test representative mobile conditions and examine Core Web Vitals alongside real page behaviour.

Inspect the search foundation

Each important page should have a descriptive title, a useful meta description, one clear primary heading and a logical internal-link path. Canonical tags, robots instructions and XML sitemaps need to agree. Indexing should be checked in search tools rather than assumed from the existence of a sitemap.

Look for operational risk

WordPress core, themes and plugins should have a documented update routine, current backups and a tested recovery path. Remove abandoned extensions, review administrator access and protect forms from abuse. Public scanners can identify surface signals; they cannot replace authenticated inspection of the dashboard, hosting, database and logs.

Finish with the business path

A technically healthy page can still fail if the visitor cannot understand the offer or take the next step. Check service clarity, proof, calls to action, form delivery and analytics. The final report should separate urgent faults, high-value improvements and optional refinements so work can be prioritized responsibly.
